Right now, this is how I feel:

Frog fish. (Internet file photo.)
My apologies to that frog fish. I am sure that in the Frog Fish World, it is a fit and superior specimen. I, on the other hand, just feel freakishly out of shape. CrossFit makes me feel that way.
Okay, so apart from last week’s usual aches and pains, my shoulders are now sitting on my frame like heavy logs from all those kettlebell jerks last Saturday. And there’s a lot of tightness in my hamstrings from the jerk squats. There’s also a vague ache somewhere in the upper abdominal muscles from those pathetic dragon flag attempts.
I showed up early enough today to do 20 push-ups, 20 squats and the 300-m. rows. There was one more item on the warm-up list but I didn’t know what it was but I suspect it involved something fancy with a jump rope and, unless anyone is impressed by my .05 unders, that’s as fancy as I get on those bloody things. Anyway, I ran out of time for whatever it was and it was time to listen to Karen explain the WOD.
We had to do 5 rounds of the following within 20 minutes:
- 15 thrusters
- 15 bar-facing burpees
Right. If you watched that thruster video, you’ll see that it goes down into a squat before going into an overhead press. Didn’t I just mention that my hamstrings and shoulders areDEAD?! Argh!
Recommended weight for women was 65 lbs. I went for the 45-lb. bar. After doing eight reps in the first round, I wanted to die. Karen replaced the 45-lb. bar with a 25-lb. bar since it was the only one available (- it was full house at the gym today and some had to sit out the workout and wait for a second round). The 25-lb. bar was too light and I’m sure a 35-lb. one would have been more ideal, but just doing those squats was exhausting and, in the end, I was glad I wasn’t lifting a heavy weight.
I finished and collapsed on the floor after 17:07 minutes. Nothing to crow about. I feel like I haven’t worked out a day in my life and have spent the last year on a couch, eating popcorn and drinking soda. I always wonder if CrossFit gets any easier with time or if I will, at the very least, get any better at this.
