Private TRX session, 2:15 PM
CrossFit, 4:00 PM
TRX trainer, Benjie, wasn’t in today so I trained with a guy called Gary. I know I’ve said this before but I really do enjoy working out with different trainers as they each have different styles, techniques and approaches and it gives the workout a fresh perspective. Gary gave me more of a proper workout than Benjie did, timing me on each exercise (30-40 seconds), with a smooth, immediate transition into the next exercise, while Benjie insisted that I do 25 reps of each exercise and we’d stop and start as he’d demo an exercise.
One of the exercises I did today with Gary.
So today’s TRX training was, more or less, one fluid, continuous workout for 45 minutes, with only two quick water breaks. The great thing about the Finix trainers is that they don’t watch the clock. Both Benjie and Gary would have kept going had I not inquired about the time and freaked out, worried that I’d be late for CrossFit and have to do 10 burpees for every minute late. (Yup, it’s now policy.)
CrossFit MNL’s new 4 PM sessions are handled by RJ, the bloke responsible for the “Chainsaw Massacre” WOD during “Make Your Own WOD Week”. He has since advanced from being one of us regular Crossfit Joe’s to superhuman CrossFit trainer.
Today’s WOD was:
-
10 box jumps (Rx: 24" box – men, 18" box – women) – Yes, I did Rx. FYI, before we began the WOD, I tried jumping on and off the 24" box, and did it! I don’t think I could do this WOD on it but I could certainly manage a few box jumps.
-
20 toes-to-bar – You should know this by now: Knees-to-chest for me, please.
-
30 kettlebell swings (Rx: 32 kg. – men; 24 kg. – women) – Pfft. The two other guys I was with were only using the 16-kilo kettlebell so, of course, I went for the 12 kilo one. If it were a regular kettlebell swing, I would have done it with the 16-kilo kettlebell. But this is CrossFit, The Land of The Crazy Overhead Swings, remember? I prefer my head without any kettlebell dents, thank you. 12 kilos it was for me.

15 box jumps

30 toes to bar

40 kettlebell swings

30 box jumps

40 toes to bar

50 kettlebell swings
Since there were only three of us, RJ was breathing heavily down my neck. “Your form! Get your ears behind your arms! That doesn’t count! Do it again!” Holymotherofgod.
While I was doing knees-to-chest: “What the hell was that?! Lift your knees higher! That doesn’t count! Do it again!”
My box jumps, apparently, were flawless.
Even with RJ keeping a close watch (and count), I still finished first. Judging by the scores on the board (and, yes, it seems that all the other girls also settled for the 12-kilo kettlebell), I finished before everyone else today too. If none of the girls did toes-to-bar then, I must say, it wasn’t too shabby a performance.
